Source essayGoogle Abhors a Vacuum

This page is a working reference for managing a professional public identity over time. It contains audit steps, owner assignments and source links. The separate essay Google Abhors a Vacuum develops the argument about information vacuums, ghost towns, historical archives and the risks of disappearing from public life. The two pages serve different purposes.

Initial search inventory

  1. Identify the subject's official name, relevant professional variations, present and previous organisations and demonstrable namesakes. Keep the underlying private information in a secure inventory.
  2. Search exact-name combinations and branded queries in conventional web search, news, images, video and relevant forums. Record URL, date, query, correct identity, factual concerns and source type. A critical story is not automatically inaccurate.
  3. Repeat a fixed set of factual prompts about the subject in Google AI results, ChatGPT, Claude, Perplexity and other relevant AI services. Track cited sources, named entities, uncertainty and errors. Save dated snapshots, since responses are variable.
  4. For owned sites, inspect Search Console coverage, sitemap, link reports, crawl statistics, Manual Actions and Security Issues where available. These reports concern the owned property, not every mention of the person elsewhere.
  5. List the owners and recovery paths for domain registration, DNS, hosting, social profiles, analytics, business listings and publishing accounts.

The official record

A useful official site should have an accurate biography, chronology, current organisation and position, selected public work, archive, contact channel and dated corrections. A company may additionally need products, locations, genuinely documented case work, history and responsible parties. Preserve provenance for claims: who said it, when, in what document, and how another reader could check it.

Technical hygiene includes descriptive titles, stable URLs, HTTPS, keyboard-accessible navigation, text alternatives for images, internally consistent headings, responsive layout, reasonable speed, correct canonical links and an XML sitemap. Use structured data that reflects visible facts. Google's SEO Starter Guide and ProfilePage reference explain supported conventions.

Professional profile review

Maintain the channels that are actually relevant: LinkedIn, recognised professional directories, publisher profiles, conference and association pages, appropriate social accounts and accessible video or podcast profiles. Check the displayed name, current role, career dates, correct official domain, accurate links, profile photo permissions, bio, contact details and ownership. Update former affiliations rather than disguising them.

Check each profile's privacy settings before making it comprehensive. A professional email is often suitable; a private mobile number, current home address, family schedule, birth date or vacation location usually has little professional value. A consistent identity needs consistent professional facts, not total disclosure of personal life.

Genuine third-party evidence

Record independent articles, interviews, association references, speaking engagements, reports and mentions with original source URLs. Add useful references from the official archive where appropriate. Genuine backlinks and citations accumulate through work other people choose to discuss. Do not invent outlets, awards, charity programmes, journalists, customer reviews, competing namesakes or outside authors to create an appearance of corroboration.

For historical material, keep an archival register with source, publication date, authorship, rights status, subject, file location and a short nonpromotional annotation. Where old work is removed, retain a citation or descriptive record when legally and ethically appropriate. A clear public correction is better than silently replacing a disputed claim.

Eligible local business profile

Where a real business qualifies, verify its Google Business Profile and review category, address or service area according to policy, operating hours, public contact details, website, products or services, photographs and review responses. Google Business Profile posts can communicate actual updates, offers and events. Review as real information changes. Do not create fake locations or require an individual who has no qualifying business to invent a listing.

Personal privacy and data-broker exposure

Inventory high-risk exposed information without publishing it: addresses, family links, private phone numbers, birth dates, property references, geo-tagged photographs, public calendars and travel patterns. Assess what an observer could infer by combining several individually ordinary facts. Use designated business contacts where possible and remove unnecessary location metadata and obsolete profile details.

DeleteMe documents individual and business privacy plans, including executive and workforce coverage. Other removal providers vary in scope and service tiers. Read actual contracts rather than assuming every vendor has an identical enterprise programme. The FTC's removal guidance explains limits of broker opt-outs, public records and search result removal. Recheck periodically: personal information can reappear.

Monthly and quarterly maintenance

WhenTaskEvidence to retain
MonthlyVerify prominent bios, profiles, contact details, relevant links, business information and privacy exposure.Dated checklist and corrected URLs.
When something happensPublish a real project, source document, talk, change of role, announcement, correction or business update.Original material, date, author and source.
QuarterlyRepeat the same branded searches and AI prompt set; review namesakes, citations, new results and factual errors.Comparable run with prompt wording and date.
QuarterlyCheck Search Console crawl and index evidence, sitemap timestamps, security and broken navigation.Report snapshot and follow-up record.
AnnuallyReview the archive, former positions, domain renewals, account recovery and the full privacy boundary.Review owner, approval and open issues.

The review cycle is an operational default, not an algorithmic publishing quota. Google's crawl documentation notes that meaningful update frequency may influence crawl demand. Its sitemap documentation says accurate lastmod dates are useful and its old ping endpoint has been retired. Search ranking is a separate question.

Previously used domains

Before buying a domain, inspect its previous websites using the Internet Archive, available historical DNS, names and backlinks, old URLs, security associations and potentially relevant trademarks. Once authorised, inspect Search Console for actual manual actions. Legitimate new use of an expired domain is permitted; Google's expired-domain-abuse policy concerns manipulative use of an established site's signals. An obsolete page returning 404 is not in itself a domain-wide penalty. Redirect only to genuinely relevant replacement pages.

Response and correction record

For a contentious result, identify its claim and source first. Decide whether it is accurate, disputed, outdated, about another person, unlawfully exposing private information or merely unfavourable. Keep any legitimate request for correction precise, documented and proportional. Public apologies and accounts of changed conduct must correspond to what the subject actually did. Avoid promises about controlling every search ranking or AI answer.
